What is parallel import?

The prices and availability of medicines and healthcare products can vary significantly between national markets, even within a highly integrated region such as the European Union. These differences create a commercial opportunity to source registered EU medicines and approved EU healthcare products from lower-priced markets and supply them to markets where prices are higher. This process is known as parallel import.

A key characteristic of parallel import is that the medicines and healthcare products are manufactured by the original manufacturer but distributed through an independent distribution channel (a wholesaler), rather than through the manufacturer’s official distribution network.

Although the imported EU product is the same medicine or healthcare product, the distribution route differs. Parallel import is legally permitted within the European Union, based on the principle of exhaustion of intellectual property rights and the free movement of goods.

The parallel import process

From manufacturer to consumer, every parallel-imported product goes through several stages:

Registration & repackaging

Parallel-imported EU medicines must obtain a national licence and regulatory approval before they can be placed on the relevant national market, making them completely safe.

In addition, parallel-imported EU medicines and healthcare products generally require packaging adjustments to comply with national regulations.

These adjustments include the following:

Our own registration team manages the entire process, from application and repackaging through to national distribution.

In our own GMP-certified production facility, we independently carry out repackaging and relabelling work for OTC products.
