(Self)care refers to the prevention of health problems by a healthy way of life. It concerns prevention as well as treatment with (self-care) medicines and (medical) care products to improve health. (Self-care) medicines, like food supplements and medical devices, can help to stay healthy.

OTC Medicines

A self-care drug is also referred to as an Over-The-Counter drug (OTC), because it is delivered ‘’directly over the counter’’. These are straightforward medicines that can be sold without a prescription and therefore without intervention of a general practitioner. OTC medicines are often sold in drugstores, health shops, supermarkets and sometimes in petrol stations.

Common OTC medication includes: painkillers, cough syrups, nasal drops, anti-diarrhea products and ointments to relieve bruises and muscle pains.

The following categories of OTC medication can be distinguished:

  • UAD: exclusively sold in pharmacies and drugstores (including health shops and supermarkets with a licensed druggist). Medicines with a UAD-status represent the biggest part of the group non-prescription drugs.
  • AV: free available products also sold at supermarkets and petrol stations (without a licensed druggist). Medicines with AV-status are non-prescription drugs with a smaller packaging size, lower strength, and more limited indications for which the product may be used.

Common free available veterinary medicines are: anti-flea and deworming products for pets.

  • URA: only available and delivered by prescription of a veterinarian or at at a pharmacy and also delivered by approved traders. These traders need a special license.

Common veterinary medicines with URA-status are: deworming products for horses and livestock and various painkillers.

  • UDA: only available and delivered by prescription of a veterinarian. Pet or livestock owners can give such such medication to their animals themselves.
