Food supplements

A food supplement is a nutrient to complement ones normal diet. It is a concentrated source of one or more vitamins, minerals or other nutrients with a nutritional or physiological (metabolism) effect.

The purpose of using food supplements is to improve health, but never to replace a varied diet. Food supplements are also used for therapeutic purposes (prevention and treatment of disease).

Common food supplements are: multivitamins, magnesium, fish oil, vitamin C and D.

Food supplements also include various herbal preparations. A herbal preparation is a substance or extract from plant material, whether processed or not.

Common herbal preparations are: turmeric, cranberry, ginkgo, valerian and garlic.

These products are sold as pills, capsules, drops, powders or drinks. They are sold over-the counter and are controlled by the Dutch Commodity Law.
